On Monday the 5th of September, Lucy Watt and Jack Calder both attended the South Christchurch Rotary Speech Competition. There were students from 7-8 different South Christchurch schools. Their journey began back in school, when they competed in the home base prelims. All Year 7 and 8 students were required to write and present a short story to their home base through speaking, as the theme this year for Rotary was ‘Storytelling’. After that 6-8 students from each home base were then selected for the semi-finals, to perform and compete against others in their year group. From this, 6 students were selected for the Grand Final. This was comprised of twelve Year 7 and 8 students, with the whole Totara Team as the audience - plus any parents who wanted to see their child perform. For this occasion, the Totara Team were lucky enough to have some awesome judges, Mrs Kerry Hall and Mrs Meg Ford. Jack (Year 8) and Lucy (Year 7) were the two winners from each year group in this final. But their ride wasn't over yet. As mentioned earlier, Jack and Lucy were now to compete against winners from other schools in the South Christchurch Rotary Speech Competition. Every school’s speeches were amazingly varied and different, but each was fantastically entertaining. When the moment came for the winners to be announced, it was Cashmere Primary with the clean sweep, with Lucy winning the Year 7 competition and Jack the Year 8. Jack and Lucy will now go on to present their speeches to the entire Christchurch Rotary Club in a couple of weeks time.

Property Update - Cultural Narrative

We are continuing to work with Mātauraka Mahaanui (our local iwi) to confirm the new Māori names for our buildings, learning spaces and learning teams. This is an exciting time for the school and we will keep you posted as there is likely to be a  significant change in the current names we use to identify teams and buildings . We are also looking forward to hearing from the rūnanga with regards to a new bilingual name to use alongside Cashmere Primary School.

These names will be significant to our local area, unique to our school and they will be names (in te reo) that the children, staff and whānau will (in time) use everyday.

Property Update : School Field

We have had the ‘grass expert’ in last week, we have had the grass mown, fertilised and are now irrigating the field. We hope to be able to use the field in term four after a few more weeks of spring growth (to strengthen our new grass). Thank you to everyone for their patience during these repairs and a huge thank you to the PTA who made these repairs possible through their funding and support.

Scooters to School

If your children are bringing scooters to school, please ensure that they walk them to and from school. We have heard about some concerning behaviours where children are travelling very fast past driveways and we would like to ensure that everyone is travelling safely and sensibly to school.

Coin trail for Maddie. (Initiative by Harriet Fleury.)

Thank you to all those families who supported this worthwhile cause by bringing a coin to school on Friday last week. In case children forgot to put their coin on the trail we will keep it going for a few more days. The children can pop up anytime and place their coin on the love heart in the office area  and we will all be helping to support Maddie to get to America for her new kidney.

Sports Uniforms

Please return all uniforms including Koru Games to the school office asap.

3. Cheerful fabric to recover cushions

4. Hard toys for babies that can be disinfected

5. A large rug - teaching mums how to be down on the floor with their babies

This collection will be actioned next term - this notice is to give our community a chance to think about what they might wish to thoughtfully donate over the holidays.

As you would have heard from your children, our annual disco was a huge success this year with a fantastic 'GLOW' theme! Great music, a packed hall, goodie bags and lots of fun competitions made the evening one to remember...and repeat!

We raised over $3000 - an amazing amount!!

Of course, an event this good does not come without a lot of organisation and we have the 'Disco Team' - Jen, Steph, Katie, Meg, Kath and Rose to thank for such a fun night.
