Important Notices

John Quinn and Lucy Hone return for a Second Evening:

Tuesday the 30th of August from 7-8pm. Tea and coffee will be  served afterwards so please feel free to stay on after the session.

Venue isCashmere Presbyterian Church, 2 Macmillian Avenue, in the church hall.

As we informed you last week we are fortunate enough to have Lucy and John with us for a return visit. They will build on the first session so if you came last time it won’t repeat the same information. If you didn’t come last time you will still learn some valuable insights.

Lucy and John will share with us how parents and schools are uniquely placed to make a positive difference to students' wellbeing and develop learning skills that enable them to be resilient. Today’s students live in a fast-paced world that is continuing to evolve with the increase of technology.  By teaching kids life-long skills to build wellbeing we are nurturing a generation better equipped to manage stress and building protective factors around their own mental health. We know that mental health issues are on the rise - particularly in Chch after the quakes. By applying a positive lens to their education, through a range of tools and approaches based on the science of positive psychology, they will be more likely to develop a growth mindset that enables and sustains lifelong learning.

Come and join Dr Lucy Hone and John Quinn who will discuss what this can look like with their work already in Christchurch schools.

Type to learn

Learning to type is one important skill which can be of great value to children as they progress through life. Research has shown that it takes 15 minutes practice a day to become a proficient typist.

At Cashmere Primary we have utilised a server based typing programme called Type to Learn. Each year small groups of identified children have used this programme to help them become more proficient at typing.

The Type to Learn Software has just become web based and we are excited to announce that we have purchased a school licence. We are offering all our Year 4-8 students the chance to purchase a login to the programme for $20 per child. This will give your child access for the rest of term 3 & term 4 2016 and for term 1 2017.

If you are interested please follow this link to the google registration formhttps://goo.gl/forms/nz5ZuGn37qHmqLUX2  and then pay the money by cash or cheque to the school office. Please note it will take Admin a week to generate the log in which will be sent to you.

Some selected children already do ‘Type to Learn’ at school and there will be no cost for these families as the programme will continue at school.

Keeping Ourselves Safe

Over the next few weeks we will be teaching the personal safety programme Keeping Ourselves Safe.

Keeping Ourselves Safe has been designed to give students the skills to cope in situations involving abuse. It has three overall aims:

  • to develop and strengthen children’s skills to keep themselves safe with other people;

  • to support and encourage abused children to get help from caring adults;

  • to make teachers and parents/caregivers more aware of the need to keep children safe from abuse by adults or other children.

A parent and caregiver meeting will be held as follows:

Date: Tuesday 30th August

Time:  2-3pm

Venue: Staffroom

Information will be sent home with your child regarding this programme.

RDA Gingerbread Horse Fundraiser

The McKay family will be baking up a storm as RDA is holding its annual Gingerbread Horse fundraising campaign.  Speaking of Horse's did you know all Horse's in the Southern Hemisphere celebrate their birthday on the 1st of August!  Why not help celebrate these beautiful animals by purchasing a delicious Gingerbread Horse.

Gingerbread Horse's will be on sale in the office on August 1st, all money raised goes to our branch of Riding for the Disabled, Christchurch.  Riding for the disabled is such an amazing awesome organisation and has helped such a lot of people young and old.  Gluten free biscuits will also be available as well as the normal variety.  All biscuits $2.00.  Your support would be gratefully appreciated.

Many thanks, the McKay Family.

The Colgate Oral Care Brigade

As part of the Success Badge award, Alisha Warwick is organising a new recycling system for CPS.  It involves recycling old toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes and the packaging that they come in.  Not only is this in keeping with the Enviroschool idea of recycling and limiting waste, there is also a competition to see which school can recycle the most with cash prizes to be won.  There will be a box in the office to put the recyclable products in.  Please click here to see what products you can bring in.  For more information visit www.terracycle.co.nz Thanks for your support.  The final day for collection will be the 22nd of August.

Support for our school families - A message from the PTA

There has been a tab set up at Taste@20 as a small but practical gesture of support for the three families in our school community who we know are directly dealing with illness . As well as their yummy food, coffee and hot chocolate Taste@20 make the most amazing juices which are highly nutritious and delicious.

It's just a little thing we can do to show our ongoing support to Eugenie Wang, Jonty Gray and the Pawson family.

So if you are popping into Taste@20 or just passing by on your way up/down the hill, please consider asking the lovely ladies to add your change (or a bit more) to the tab for these lovely Cashmere Primary School folk.

We'll let you know if other ways to show our ongoing support and aroha come up over the weeks ahead.

Kind regards, The PTA
